The first aromatic impression is surprisingly floral for such a warm year. Slightly mentholated liquorice and yellow fruit flavours. Delicate aromas of citrus fruit, barley sugar and dried fruit, with fine balance and great freshness. With a little aeration, the bouquet blossoms to reveal a growing complexity of spicy notes. On the palate, Clos du Mesnil offers a fleshy, dense texture with a slightly salty aftertaste that testifies to its singularity without losing its classic crystalline purity. It seduces the palate with its generosity, roundness and beautiful intensity. The initial hints of madeleine and brioche soon give way to pastry notes – tarte tatin, lemon meringue, bitter orange and subtle spices – which accompany a lovely, taut finish of candied ginger. Krug Clos du Mesnil 2006 is an ideal accompaniment to fish or seafood dishes, such as a fillet of dab with saffron or pike-perch with beurre blanc, pan-fried scallops or tuna carpaccio. It also goes well with delicately flavoured meat dishes.
