Description
The Couarres vineyard is located in the centre of the Merfy terroir, on the least draining part of the village. There are two types of subsoil in this parcel: Tuffeau and clay. For these two plots, man’s work is much the same, with greater useful reserves than the neighbouring vines, and an ability to maintain a level of humidity that avoids water deficiencies. While many of the soils in the village dry out quickly, allowing the soil to be worked quickly after the rains, Les Couarres requires patience. Yields from this plot are the highest in the estate and often have to be limited by extensive de-budding. The Couarres wines are certainly the laziest. They like to be simply accompanied and protected to avoid the stormy adventure of rapid oxidation. The wines from the “Les Couarres” parcel blossom over time. These are certainly the wines that require the most rigour when it comes to ageing. The fine, sticky texture of the clay means that rapid oxygen uptake must be avoided as far as possible when maturing the wines. The Couarres wine has a spherical “stickiness” on the palate, followed by a freshness with medium acidity throughout the finish.

Tasting | The nose reveals notes of white fruit, yellow fruit and pastry, as well as a fine minerality. It's open with apple, apricot, ripe, pear, a little caramel, cinnamon, butter and a little oxidation. It's quite enveloping, with a little spice and a hint of floral notes. Magnificent maturity and depth on the palate. The wine is already very complex, with a trace of acidity integrated like goldsmith's work. Nuts compete with apricots for first place, then melt into a combination of sweet spices such as cinnamon and ginger. Beautiful saline finish with a vinous length. |
